Tympanoplasty is classified into five different types, originally described by Horst Ludwig Wullstein (–) in Type 1 involves repair of the tympanic membrane alone, when the middle ear is normal. A type 1 tympanoplasty is synonymous to myringoplasty.; Type 2 involves repair of the tympanic membrane and middle ear in spite of slight defects in the middle ear.

Your eardrum divides your outer ear canal from your inner ear. Tympanoplasty may be needed if your eardrum is completely torn, collapsed, or diseased. Type I Tympanoplasty (Myringoplasty): It involves the restoration of perforated eardrums by grafting with materials like Gelfilm, AlloDerm, Gelfoam, fat, and cigarette paper.
Type II Tympanoplasty: It is used for tympanic perforations with malleus erosion and involves grafting onto the incus or remains of malleus.
