INTRODUCTION. Since the introduction of tympanoplasty in by Zoellner 1 and Wullstein, 2 numerous graft materials and methods of placement have been described to reconstruct the tympanic membrane (TM). Skin, fascia, vein, perichondrium, and dura mater have all been used for TM reconstruction. To date, temporalis fascia and perichondrium remain the most commonly . tympanoplasty. O-U tympanoplasty is ideal for perforations of all sizes in all parts of the ear drum, affords excellent exposure of the anterior middle ear, has no risk of blunting, and gives a high success rate using a relatively simple technique. Tympanoplasty is classified into five different types, originally described by Horst Ludwig Wullstein (–) in Type 1 involves repair of the tympanic membrane alone, when the middle ear is normal. A type 1 tympanoplasty is synonymous to myringoplasty.; Type 2 involves repair of the tympanic membrane and middle ear in spite of slight defects in the middle ear.

Tympanoplasty is surgery to close a perforated (torn) tympanic membrane and repair your middle ear. Your tympanic membrane (eardrum) is a tissue found in the middle part of your ear.

Your eardrum divides your outer ear canal from your inner ear. Tympanoplasty may be needed if your eardrum is completely torn, collapsed, or diseased. Tympanoplasty with mastoidectomy—repair of a tear in the eardrum and eradication of bony infection in the area behind the ear; Reasons for Procedure.

The procedure can also help to: Restore hearing and treat certain types of deafness; Prevent middle ear infections that occur through a chronic perforation. Type I Tympanoplasty (Myringoplasty): It involves the restoration of perforated eardrums by grafting with materials like Gelfilm, AlloDerm, Gelfoam, fat, and cigarette paper.

Type II Tympanoplasty: It is used for tympanic perforations with malleus erosion and involves grafting onto the incus or remains of malleus. I had a tympanoplasty surgery on my left ear 3 years ago and my right ear last week along with a mastoidectomy and hearing aid implant the pain from this surgery last week is way worse then the first one but it was a lot more work done this time my left ear healed fine the hearing is still dull however the doc said I have to have some bones put.
